A number of experts from the Visegrad countries (Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia) will discuss human rights and democracy. They will comment on the current situation in their respective V4 countries, with the main focus on judicial independence, as well as on hate speech and discrimination.

The conference will take place on Friday 23.10.2020 from 10.00-12.00 (keynote and panel 1) and from 13.30-15.00 (panel 2).

The event was organized by the Centre for Human Rights and Democracy as a celebration of 70 years of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which was adopted in 1948. It took place on the premises of the Faculty of Law at Masaryk University in Brno, on the 17th of December, 2018. Several prominent speakers participated in the discussion:

The discussion took place in the auditorium of the Faculty of Law of Masaryk University on the 28th of November, 2018. The former advocate from the League of Human Rights and the leader of the Analytical Department of the Constitutional Court took part in the discussion.

The Centre for Human Rights and Democracy organised a lecture on the 3rd of October 2018 on the premises of the Law Faculty of Masaryk University. The speakers were members of the Centre, including Jan Lhotský, Hubert Smekal and Lucie Nechvátalová. The lecture concentrated on international criminal justice, the European system of human rights protection and the evolution of human rights in the Czech Republic.

On the 4th of October 2017, the Centre for Human Rights and Democracy and the Student Section IIPSA organised a round table called “International Criminal Court: functioning and current challenges.“ The guest at the round table was Robert Fremr – a Czech judge on the International Criminal Court.

On the 6th of June 2017, the Centre for Human Rights and Democracy organised a seminar called “Internally Displaced People: Current perspectives and challenges regarding protection,“ in the premises of the Faculty of Social Studies (Masaryk University). The speakers were Bríd Ní Ghráinne (Sheffield University), Kristýna Andrlová (UNHCR in the Czech Republic) and Šárka Dušková (Organisation for Helping Refugees).

The discussion themed “Czech weapons and the Middle East” took place in the Kulturárium café in Brno, on the 24th of May, 2018. The speakers that took part in the discussion were:

Martin Balcar, the leader of Amnesty International’s campaigns (one of these campaigns is also “Guns under control”). He is the co-author of AI memorandums.

Josef Kraus, working at the Masaryk University (Security and Strategic Studies). He is interested in the Middle East region and the issues of terrorism, Islamic terrorism and proliferation.

In February 2017, the Centre for Human Rights and Democracy organised the national round of the Jessup Moot Court Competition in the premises of the Constitutional Court. The event was supported by the White & Case law company.
